BIPV – Building-integrated photovoltaics

Thermogalze UK building-integrated photovoltaics

Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are photovoltaic materials that are used to replace conventional building materials in parts of the building envelope such as the roof, skylights, or facades.

Thermoglaze UK, in connection with its sister company Silvercrest Energy Ltd an NICEIC MCS certified company,  develops, designs, Installs and project-manages Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) solutions.  We are an innovative (UK) based developer of BIPV glass into Aluminium frames systems. Previous works have included:

  • Curtain walling
  • Facades
  • Lantern lights
  • Roof glass
  • Electric opening skylights
  • Smoking shelters
  • Car ports
  • Domestic or commercial windows
  • Glazed stairwells

Our unique sealed unit, and single ply PV glass panels are UK made and inserted into Comar frames, fabricated to order in our own factory in Basildon, Essex. We embed solar PV cells into sealed units, or onto single glaze, toughened safety glass and tinted generating renewable energy and a return on the investment.

Since the introduction of the Code for Sustainable homes you must incorporate some form of non-fossil fuel into the development in some way, shape or form.  Most commercial or domestic new build dwellings can have one or more renewable energy product installed at the time of the build quickly and easily. But there are many exceptions.

The aesthetics of solar PV on or in roof may not appeal or in an area of outstanding beauty or a conservation zone. The roof may be shaded, or awkward to fit too. What would you do then to achieve the sustainability regulation?

More recently if you qualify for ESOS, you too have an obligation to incorporate and manage your energy and its impact on the environment. larger buildings, particularly in built up areas have little or no outside space. Given the height and size of some buildings you would have to cover the entire roof with Solar PV to have any effect or two meet regulation. Often the roof space is only a fraction of the size of the building it covers and houses all of the plant, such as A.C and mechanical extraction, Fire routes or maybe glass light wells leaving your plans for a renewable energy product un viable.

However, it is often overlooked that many of these buildings have huge areas of glass. Often unused glass faced stairwells, lantern lights or just the glazing itself. We can design and install solar embedded glass panels that either slip into the existing frames, or more typically install a thermally broken frame system such as a Comar system complete with solar cell glass.

This covers both thermal efficiency by replacing draft prone glazed areas and creates useable electricity and an income from the still available government subsidies. If there is any export it is sold at an agreed rate per Kw hour.

Quite simply most buildings have the capacity for solar embedded glass. Thermoglaze UK make it achievable with a simple design, manufacture and installation process.

We work with clients, architects, surveyors and throughout the construction industry to provide turnkey and bespoke integrated PV solutions.   Our products provide an exceptional finish to a building enabling environmental targets and planning regulations to be met. Indeed our contribution to BREEAM environmental assessment method can be sufficient to extend classification by a whole category.
